Origin and Characteristics

The German Pinscher is a very old breed. The first mention of its existence comes from the 17th century. The name of the breed apparently stems from the word "pinch" or from the French "pincer", which means the same. Originally there were two varieties of Pinchers = smooth-coated and hard-coated. They were bred together. The hard-coated pinschers separated later on and formed a foundation for the modern breed of Schnautzers. Pinschers were kept in large homesteads, where they had been catching mice and rats. They served as watch dogs at the same time.

Today´s Pinschers inherited from their predecessors outstanding characteristics, such as natural watchfulness, high spirit, loyality, eagerness to learn, independence and fearlessness. They are mistrusting towards strangers, however, they are always good-natured and loving to the members of their family. Pinchers are willing to sacrifice their own lives for the safety of their family. Consistency and basic obedience training is required since puppyhood. They can be easily trained for agility due to their speed and eagerness to learn new things.

They make greatful companions for long walks and are more than happy to take part in children´s play. It´s the ideal breed to own in the city and/or in a flat. Their size is just right and their coat is very easy to take care of. The pinscher is the happiest in the midst of his/her family. Only there we can expect the puppy to grow up into a friendly and well-adjusted dog. Staying outside shoud be just a temporary measure, e.g. while nobody is at home. It is necessary to let the puppy play often with people, dogs and other animals.
